Century-old tea on sale in Hong Kong
A 109-year-old tea has gone on sale at Hong Kong's first international tea fair, a media report said Thursday.
Just 10 grams of the pu-erh tea, which takes its name from Pu'er county in Yunnan province in south-west China, costs 8,000 Hong Kong dollars ($1,025), the South China Morning Post newspaper said.
Sun Sing Tea is also selling two 300 gram-320 gram slabs of 1950 vintage pu-erh tea for 130,000 Hong Kong dollars and 70,000 Hong Kong dollars at the three-day fair which opened Thursday.
Hong Kong Trade Development Council assistant executive director Raymond Yip Chak-yan said the territory has the potential to become a tea hub because of its tax-free and gateway status with China.
Yip said: 'Tea trading performs well in economic downturns because many people drink it to ease stress and tea is the second most popular drink in the world after water.'
Tea is also the most popular beverage in Hong Kong and the city has the highest consumption of tea of all Asian cities.
The three-day fair features nearly 250 exhibitors from 10 countries and includes a tea gallery featuring tea pots, tea bricks, brewing equipment and tea-making performances.
