Thursday 3rd September, 2009

Americans in increasing numbers are relying on food stamps.

The Department of Agriculture has reported that more than 35 million Americans were receiving assistance in the June period.

The number was an increase of 700,000 people compared to May.

The food stamp program, which has been renamed the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helps poor Americans cover their food and grocery costs.

The average recipient of food stamps in June received more than $133 in assistance. The average household received more than $293.

People are entitled to food stamps only if they have a gross monthly income of 130 percent or less of the US poverty level.
