SHARAN, Afghanistan -- Seventeen Taliban militants were killed in airstrikes hitting Taliban positions in two eastern Afghan provinces over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

"Seven militants, including a Taliban bomb expert, were killed after Afghan Air Force (AAF) struck a Taliban hideout in Tooat locality, Yaya Khil district Sunday evening," provincial police spokesman, Haidar Hadil, told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Airstrikes-Militants)

CAIRO -- Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has issued a decree for renewing the state of emergency nationwide for three months starting Monday, state-run Ahram newspaper said.

"The armed forces and the police will take necessary measures to fight terrorism and its finance, maintain security nationwide, protect public and private properties and preserve citizens' lives," said the decree, which was published in the official gazette. (Egypt-State of Emergency)

VILNIUS -- Lithuania's conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) party has won the second round of parliamentary elections held on Sunday, preliminary results from the Central Electoral Commission showed Monday morning.

The TS-LKD secured 50 seats in the 141-seat unicameral parliament. The ruling Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Unions secured 32 seats and its leader Ramunas Karbauskis admitted his party's defeat and congratulated the conservatives on their victory. (Lithuania-Elections)

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 17,347 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, a new all-time high, as infections have been resurging, the country's COVID-19 response center said Monday.

Russia's cumulative number of coronavirus cases has grown to 1,531,224, including 26,269 deaths and 1,146,096 recoveries, the center said in a statement. (Russia-Coronavirus)
