TALUQAN, Afghanistan, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The latest attack by Taliban militants in Khwaja Ghar district of the northern Takhar province was repulsed, with the militants running away after suffering casualties, district governor Mohammad Omar said Monday.

"A group of Taliban rebels launched attack on the headquarters of Khawaja Ghar district at 01:00 a.m. local time today but policemen retaliated, forcing the attacking insurgents to flee after leaving seven bodies behind," Omar told Xinhua.

Omar also said that three policemen were also killed and eight people including six militants and two policemen injured in the firefight lasting for several hours.

Taliban militants have yet to make a comment on the report.
