Afghanistan reports 18 new COVID-19 cases

KABUL, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan recorded 18 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing its total tally to 55,664, its Public Health Ministry said Tuesday.

One patient died from the coronavirus epidemic during the cited period, taking the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 2,436 since outbreak of the pandemic in February last year in the Central Asian country, the ministry said in a statement.

An additional 72 patients were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recoveries from COVID-19 to 48,967 in the country, the statement said.

The spread of novel coronavirus, according to the public health ministry, has been significantly slowed down in Afghanistan. The ministry still called on the Afghan people to follow health guidelines including wearing a mask and avoiding unnecessary visits to crowded places.
