KABUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Afghanistan's Public Health Ministry reported 16 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, raising the total nationwide infections to 55,696.

The pandemic has so far claimed 2,442 lives in Afghanistan since February last year, up by four in the past 24 hours, the ministry said in a statement.

A total of 195 people recovered during the period, according to the statement.

According to the ministry, 293,739 tests for the virus have been carried out in Afghanistan as of Thursday.
