Fighting kills 8 in northern Afghan province

KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, April 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of eight fighters, including five militants and three police, were killed as clash broke out in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province on Tuesday, provincial government spokesman Esmatullah Muradi said.

The clash erupted after a group of Taliban militants attacked security checkpoints in Bolak Awal area outside the provincial capital Kunduz city early Tuesday, which lasted for couple of hours, and as a result, five militants and three policemen were killed and six others, including two policemen, injured, the spokesman added.

In the meantime, a source said on condition of anonymity that two more policemen had gone missing.

Taliban militants, who have intensified operations and are active in parts of Kunduz province, with capital Kunduz city 250 km north of Kabul, are yet to make comment on the clash.
